2011 Recognition Award Gala: Celebrating performance and ecoresponsibility

The Palais des congrès de Montréal helped close the second annual Rendez-vous du Savoir on October 6 by hosting an exceptional evening draped in ecofriendliness.
The 600 guests who attended the prestigious event came to applaud the newly appointed Ambassadors and take in a highly colourful evening that also celebrated a prolific city.

"For over two decades, the exceptional dedication of the Palais' Ambassadors has proudly contributed to promoting our city worldwide," underscored Marc Tremblay, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Palais. "These 11 rising public figures, already very active in their respective fields, are responsible for bringing large-scale international conventions to Montréal that are expected to generate upwards of $42,000,000 in economic spinoffs over the coming years, along with invaluable intellectual spinoffs."

In addition to celebrating the contribution of new Ambassadors, the Recognition Award Gala also paid a vibrant tribute to a model of "business-university" collaboration, i.e. the CRIAQ Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Québec, and honoured the four 2011 winners of "Ça mérite d'être reconnu!," a competition that aims to recognize emerging researchers who distinguish themselves through their remarkable talent, the excellence of their research and their impact on society.

With the support of its sponsors Tourisme Québec and Desjardins, the 2011 Recognition Award Gala put together a thoroughly unique "gastronomic symphony." Also, this was the first edition of the Gala to be certified a Level 1 ecoresponsible event by the Conseil québécois des événements écoresponsables for meeting Standard 9700-253 of the BNQ standards council of Québec. Spearheading the event's numerous green measures were the use of sustainability-minded suppliers located within 100 kilometres of the Palais and the composting of organic kitchen waste. In addition, the Palais asked the 10 participating chefs to incorporate at least one regional food item in their menus and to privilege organic and fair-trade food products. The guests found the resulting gastronomic adventure delightful!

2011 Star Researchers

The Rendez-vous du Savoir partners had the pleasure of unveiling the winners of the second edition of the competition "Ça mérite d'être reconnu!" during the 2011 Recognition Award Gala. The four star researchers honoured during the evening were:
Samuelle Ducrocq-Henry, Ph. D. in communication, Éric Deneault, M. Sc., Caroline Boudoux, Ph. D., junior engineer, Krista Byers-Heinlein, Ph. D.
(from left to right in the picture)

"Ça mérite d'être reconnu!" was created to recognize and promote emerging researchers from Québec universities in the following three categories: social sciences and humanities, arts and literature; natural sciences and engineering; and health. This year, the competition chose the four winning researchers from 43 nominations submitted by 13 universities. The selection committee was composed of 11 public figures from the economic, scientific and political communities, and was chaired by Dr. Pavel Hamet, O.Q., M.D., Ph. D., full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal.

Rendez-vous du Savoir: Fostering durable ties between universities and businesses

The second annual Rendez-vous du Savoir was a resounding success, attracting over 3,000 participants. Devised as an exchange forum for businesses and universities, the event is helping pave the way for durable, productive and innovative collaborations.

"The Rendez-vous du Savoir's activities enabled us to showcase various types of rewarding partnerships and to start thinking about the types of actions we could be moving forward as a means of encouraging closer working ties between universities and corporations, along with measures that could help speed up the process," indicated Dr Pavel Hamet, full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Predictive Genomics, President of the Palais' Ambassadors Club, and the event's co-spokesperson. Added Monique F. Leroux, President and CEO of the Desjardins Group, and co-spokesperson for the Rendez-vous du Savoir: "It's a rallying call we are sending out to everyone who has a role to play. We must bolster the synergies our society requires to become prosperous, creative and knowledge-driven."

The results of a survey conducted by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal, jointly with the Léger Marketing firm, helped spark the many discussions held throughout the Rendez-vous du Savoir. The survey essentially found that:

  • Nearly half of Québec companies do not see the relevance of collaborating
    with universities.
  • Most Québec companies view the university system merely as a talent incubator.
  • Universities stand to gain by doing a better job promoting their ability to contribute
    to business success.
  • Companies must try to diversify and increase their collaborations.

Buoyed by the success of the second annual Rendez-vous du Savoir, which took place October 5 and 6, the event's organizing partners are already planning a new edition for Fall 2012. We are looking forward to another successful turnout!

The Rendez-vous du Savoir is jointly organized by the Palais des congrès de Montréal, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal, the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ), the Conférence régionale des élus (CRÉ) de Montréal (Montréal region conference of elected representatives), Montréal International, Ville de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal and the Montréal Council on Foreign Relations (MCFR). Desjardins is the presenting sponsor of the event, and Bell is associate sponsor.
2010-2011: Record results and $225 M in economic spinoffs
for the Palais des congrès de Montréal

The Palais des congrès de Montréal had a remarkable year. The 350 events and nearly 632,000 participants it hosted from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 amounted to its finest performance since 2004-2005, and set new records.

These visitors booked 207,000 room nights
in the city's hotels and helped generate an estimated $225 M in economic spinoffs, of which $173 M stemmed from the 30 national and international conventions hosted by
the Palais.

The number of future events secured also
rose by 24% over the previous year, with 397 conventions, exhibitions and corporate events being confirmed for the coming years. The convention market as a whole once again performed well, also posting a 24% increase compared to the previous year. You can find out more about the Palais' 2010-2011 results by browsing the annual report (in French only).
A new charter for a more tailored level of recognition

Have you had the opportunity to peruse the new Ambassadors Club Appointment and Recognition Charter we sent you last August?

Drafted as part of the Club's 2011-2013 action plan, the charter makes it possible to recognize the contribution of the many people actively involved in future conventions as well as the future economic and intellectual development of Québec.

The charter defines the Club's memberships into four separate categories and titles, each with its own set of privileges:

  • Appointed Ambassador, wherein members retain their title for up to 4 years following the hosting of their event;
  • Executive Ambassador, reserved for members who are actively involved in securing new conventions for the Palais;
  • Emeritus Ambassador, for members appointed with regard to two or more events, with the latest occurring within the last 8 years;
  • Ambassador, for members whose events occurred more than 4 years earlier.
The Club's mission is to promote Montréal as a first-rate destination for large-scale international and U.S. events. Our sincere aim is for a dynamic partnership and for our joint development and strategic alliance efforts to continue to drive Québec's knowledge base and economy forward.

Consequently, we would like to underline the remarkable work of our Emeritus Ambassadors:
