URBAN INTEGRATION
The Palais is a pivotal component of Montréal’s international district, which is a strategic centrepiece of the city’s ongoing development. Located at the centre of the downtown pedestrian network, the Palais is a hub linking together many of the city’s districts.
Each side of the convention centre has its own personality, integrating naturally with the district it faces. They all share a common denominator: the use of glass to illustrate openness.
The Palais’ expansion in the early 2000s served to mend the urban fabric that was severed by the construction of the Ville-Marie expressway, reuniting once again Old Montréal and the city’s downtown. The Palais also restored this section of the city to pedestrians, thanks in part to the public square facing the convention centre’s multicoloured front, which features a remarkable sculpture by the world-renowned Québec artist, Jean-Paul-Riopelle. |
